What is Off Page SEO?

From our introductory article, we have a basic understanding of what off page SEO is, and its role in your inbound marketing campaigns.  Now, we are going to take a more in-depth look at specific off page techniques you can use which will help boost the rankings, traffic, and ultimately revenue of your site:

  • Reputation Management – This means becoming a member of all the different social media sites out there, such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and more.  You can then use these tools both for customer service, as well as to solidify your brand and present consistent messaging to customers.  Being active frequently helps.
  • Start a Blog – Having a blog really enables you to leverage unique content for SEO purposes.  Promote your own blog posts on other, related blogs, and you can simultaneously build relevant backlinks to your site at the same time.
  • Participate in Forums – Consider creating a forum specifically for your company, or actively join established community forums, and use your posts and participation here to build backlinks as well.
  • Submit Site to Search Engines – Don’t forget to actually submit your website to all the popular search engines people use.  This is one of the most important steps in off page SEO.
  • Submit Site to Directories – Also take advantage of the large, free directory submission sites, and make sure that your information is current and up to date with them.
  • Utilize Social Bookmarking – Since many web 2.0 sites are updated so frequently, search engines really like them.  If you engage in some social bookmarking on the right sites, you can really see a traffic boost back to your site.
  • Exchange Links – Consider approaching other industry participants and asking if they would be interested in exchanging links with you.
  • Improve Your Internal Linking – Work on improving your internal linking as well.  While this is technically not off page SEO, it is related to links, and so we have included it thematically here.  Make sure that each of your web pages links to the other parts of your site correctly, using good anchor text.
  • Use Photos – If you have any art assets, such as entertaining product pictures, post them up on your social media channels, and encourage friends and customers to comment and engage.
  • Consider Video – Along with photo and art assets, consider building a content library which includes some video.  Sites like YouTube continue to grow in popularity, and you should remember to use all forms of multimedia to achieve maximum effect.
  • Get Traction on Review Sites – Ask satisfied customers to write a review of your business on popular sites to build a positive online reputation.  Reviews are extremely important to your off page SEO.
  • Don’t Forget Local Optimization – Along with these other changes, ensure that you get listed properly on sites used to compute local search engine algorithms.  This means sites like Google Local/Maps, etc.
  • Try Article Submission – Another great way to build deep and long-lasting links is to practice article marketing.  Submit them to popular article sites, and you will eventually get a lot of link juice from these sorts of pieces.
  • Put Out Press Releases – You can use both free sites and paid distribution channels to put out press releases.  These releases get a lot of distribution and coverage, which is great for a broad link blast.
  • Classified Ads – Classified ads and popular sites like Craigslist can also be a great way to spread basic word about your product or service.

This is just a handful of some of the different off page SEO promotional techniques you can choose to engage in to boost your site.
